Disc brakes on road bikes

The World Federation of the Sporting Goods Industry (WFSGI) considered to represent the cycle industry among others have finally managed to give an official statement on disc brakes and road bikes. According to the Federation, one had allegedly stayed safely behind the scenes in the past ten months. Following another accident during the first stage of the Abu Dhabi Tour 2017 (February 23 to 26), they see the need to provide explanation now.

According to WFSGI, two accidents caused by disc brakes with material defects and injuries of cyclists had happened during road races in the past ten months. Both cases had reportedly been taken very seriously by them. However, prior to giving any statements one had wanted to examine each case in detail first.

For the first accident during Paris-Roubaix 2016 WFSGI called in medical examiner Ulrich Zollinger from Bern in Switzerland. He thoroughly analysed the cuts of road racer Francisco Ventoso. In addition, the Ludwigsburg loss adjusting agency Zedler specialised in bicycle technology was commissioned to thoroughly examine the case and to make an independent risk assessment.

With regard to the accident occurred during the Abu Dhabi Tour 2017 when the two cyclists Owain Doull and Marcel Kittel sustained injuries the used material is currently examined thoroughly. In accordance with the first analyses, WFSGI believed they could state that the disc brake was probably not the reason for the accident.
