In our daily work as we deal with bicycle safety, technology and user manuals we come across lots of safety risks. The most frequent ones are published in articles of the leading German special-interest magazines TOUR – Europas Rennrad-Magazin Nr. 1, BIKE – Das Mountainbike Magazin Europas Nr. 1 and E-Bike – Das Pedelec-Magazin to make this information important for the sector accessible to a wider public.
For many years now the Eurobike Show Daily accompanying the annual international Eurobike Show has given us the opportunity to publish our perspective on major developments in the cycle industry in full-page articles.
We also speak regularly in independent lectures about all topics relating to bicycle technology and bicycle market. In addition, we are regularly cited by further special-interest magazines or trade journals as well as more and more by radio and television and in their media reports, which shows us that we are completely right with our information. On September, 18, 2004, my son, the experienced cyclist Michael S. (46), had a serious accident with his roadbike (year of construction: 2004) in the area around Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen. He died on September, 19, 2004. The accident was caused by the breakage of the carbon fork steerer tube on both sides approximately ten centimetres underneath the fork crown. Before the accident happened, my son had to brake hard and avoid an obstruction. Verifiably, he did not bump into an obstacle.
Probably, my son would still be alive if he had read the article about the dangers of carbon parts by graduate engineer Dirk Zedler published in RadMarkt-magazine. The most important statement of Dirk Zedler: "Carbon does not bend, it breaks!"
At the moment, the prosecutor is investigating the case. It won't bring back my son, but by writing this letter, I want to warn other cyclists against using carbon forks uncritically.
