All about bicycles, electric-assisted bikes, technology and safety in the press

In our daily work as we deal with bicycle safety, technology and user manuals we come across lots of safety risks. The most frequent ones are published in articles of the leading German special-interest magazines TOUR – Europas Rennrad-Magazin Nr. 1, BIKE – Das Mountainbike Magazin Europas Nr. 1 and E-Bike – Das Pedelec-Magazin to make this information important for the sector accessible to a wider public.

For many years now the Eurobike Show Daily accompanying the annual international Eurobike Show has given us the opportunity to publish our perspective on major developments in the cycle industry in full-page articles.

We also speak regularly in independent lectures about all topics relating to bicycle technology and bicycle market. In addition, we are regularly cited by further special-interest magazines or trade journals as well as more and more by radio and television and in their media reports, which shows us that we are completely right with our information. The section NEWS informs you about the latest news from our specialist fields. The reports and publications of this section are listed chronologically or according to topics of interest.

Pedelecs: New explanatory documents on tuning and retrofitting

The work group parts replacement on e-bikes and pedelecs has published two explanatory documents on the topics “Pedelec tuning” and “Retrofitting bicycles with e-drives”. They explain what is actually meant by tuning or retrofitting, the consequences for the respective vehicle as well as the legal consequences to be expected by the dealer and the vehicle user.

According to a statement of the work group, the explanatory documents serve the specialist retailers for orientation and allow a competent handling of customer inquiries in this regard.

At the end of 2015 already, the German bicycle association ZIV and the German service and bicycle association VSF in cooperation with Zedler-Institut and the umbrella organization for German industry guilds BIV had published joint guidelines for parts replacement of e-bikes / pedelecs 25. In the past year, the respective guideline for speed e-bikes / pedelecs up to a pedal assist of 45 kmh/28 mph followed – in cooperation with TUEV Rhineland and velotech.de. They give clear recommendations for use to bicycle dealers and workshops indicating what they are allowed to modify on CE marked vehicles and for which components they need the approval of the vehicle manufacturers and/or system suppliers.

The work group parts replacement on e-bikes and pedelecs consists of the umbrella organization for German industry guilds BIV, TUEV Rhineland, the test institute Velotech.de, the German service and bicycle association VSF, Zedler Institut as well as the German bicycle association ZIV.
