All about bicycles, electric-assisted bikes, technology and safety in the press

The most common safety risks that we come across in our daily work around bicycle safety, technology and operating instructions are also published by us in articles in the leading German special-interest magazines TOUR (Europe's road bike magazine no. 1), BIKE (Europe's mountain bike magazine no. 1), MYBIKE and EMTB in order to make this information, which is important for the industry, available to a wider public.

For many years now, the Eurobike Show Daily, trade fair magazine of the annual Eurobike Show, has also given us the opportunity to publish our view of major developments in the cycle industry in full-page articles.

We also speak regularly in independent expert presentations about all areas of bicycle technology and the bicycle market. In addition, we are quoted by further special-interest magazines of the industry and the trade as well as increasingly by radio and television in their media reports, which shows us that we are spot on with our advice. The section "News" informs you about the latest news from our specialist areas. Lively engagement with people

In 2005, Architekturbüro kelzenberg + jahnke was founded by the freelance architects and graduate engineers Harald Jahnke and Markus Kelzenberg in Ludwigsburg, operating as Jahnke | Architektur since May 2018.

Apart from new buildings and a strong commitment for monument protection, one focus of their work is also on energy-saving measures of buildings, be it for private individuals, business customers, the public sector or social housing. Major questions are: How is the harmony between old and new buildings in the vicinity? How can sustainability and energy-efficient facility management have influence on the construction project? For good reason, Harald Jahnke is also a certified energy efficiency consultant. The philosophy at Jahnke | Architektur can be summarized in Richard Meier’s sentence: “Architecture is ideally always direct engagement with people.” The service portfolio comprises:

  • individual advice for owners, joint ownerships, property managements and construction groups
  • development of renovation options
  • profitability analysis
  • detailed energetic building calculations
  • energy consultancy on the spot (German bafa), German energy certificate (EnEV) for residential buildings and others
  • creation and coordination of German grant applications (KfW, bafa, bdu, kea-bw, EnBW among others)

From the first plans in 2014 until completion in spring 2018 kelzenberg + jahnke were in charge of the new building of a commercial building with test laboratories, facilities for machinery construction, workshops and multi-purpose rooms including a roofed terrace.

The research on the construction and the use of different bicycle types (mountain bikes, road bikes, kids’ bikes, trekking bikes, pedelecs, e-bikes) is the focus of this institute. Bicycles and parts are tested in the test lab of the institute for bicycle technology and bicycle safety. For this purpose the company enhances the development of testing systems and equips the test labs of bicycle manufacturers. They also develop user manuals and operating instructions for e-bikes and for all types of bicycles and bicycle components.

In the new building ground-floor and basement are now accessible at ground level. The test laboratories as well as the point of delivery and dispatch are located in the basement, the offices and the experts’ department with workshop and photo lab in the ground-floor and a multi-purpose room in the upper floor. The kitchen is designed as kitchen for the staff as well as for catering purposes in the case of events. All floors are accessible by a central staircase including lift. The foyer has a high ceiling and appears like a showcase. The predominantly used materials are wood, concrete, aluminium/steel and glass.

The façade is provided with a cellulose cavity and wood fibre insulation and faced with a spruce wood panelling. All inner and outer reveals are made of spruce. Inside the load-bearing walls are made of exposed concrete, all other walls are made of 10-cm-thick sturdy wood, partly with wall linings made of triple-layer panels. Apart from carpeted floors and porcelain stoneware tiles the floors are also covered with natural rubber (workshops) and with Stuttgarter Sickerstein, i.e. open joint paving blocks from a local company, on the outside facilities.



The building shell as well as the technical installations meet strict regenerative and ecological criteria. The necessary sun protection of the large-sized windows is provided by blinds and a steel frame with louvres which also serve as anti-burglary protection. The ventilation system with heat recovery is visibly guided in the basement and in the upper floor. In the ground-floor it is hidden behind a wooden panel. The hot water production and the heating are supplied by the waste heat of the compressed air production and complemented by heat pumps, if necessary. In summer the system is used for temperature control, that is to say the temperature can be reduced by up to three kelvin.

The electrical installation is supported by a KNX bus system allowing the remote control of the building technology. The LED lighting is controlled via motion sensors. There is a large-scale photovoltaic power plant on the roof to supply laboratories, offices and charging stations for e-bikes with electricity to make them as independent as possible of the public power supply.

The aspect of ecology and sustainability is also considered for the outside facilities. The original orchard meadow on the site is being re-cultivated. One can let ones eyes wander into the green. The parking for the bicycles of the staff members are fully lined with wood and has an e-bike charging station.
