In our daily work as we deal with bicycle safety, technology and user manuals we come across lots of safety risks. The most frequent ones are published in articles of the leading German special-interest magazines TOUR – Europas Rennrad-Magazin Nr. 1, BIKE – Das Mountainbike Magazin Europas Nr. 1 and E-Bike – Das Pedelec-Magazin to make this information important for the sector accessible to a wider public.
For many years now the Eurobike Show Daily accompanying the annual international Eurobike Show has given us the opportunity to publish our perspective on major developments in the cycle industry in full-page articles.
We also speak regularly in independent lectures about all topics relating to bicycle technology and bicycle market. In addition, we are regularly cited by further special-interest magazines or trade journals as well as more and more by radio and television and in their media reports, which shows us that we are completely right with our information. The bicycle will celebrate its 200th birthday next year and it makes us very happy to see that this brilliant invention is more topical than ever. Although the business success of many manufacturers and dealers was shadowed by the changing weather conditions in 2016, there is certainty that this will not impair the popularity of bicycles and pedelecs. Various traffic counts and studies of the future confirm that for their users they play a more and more important role in transportation and leisure time.
Zedler-Institut is also optimistic about the upcoming anniversary year. In 2017 we will not only celebrate the bicycle’s birthday, but also the move into our new own head office. The new building accounts for the company’s growth of the past years and allows us to handle our customer’s orders even quicker and more efficiently.
However, before we set off into the new year with a strong impetus, we’ll get ourselves a little breather at the end of the year. Our working year ends on December 23, 2016 and our operations will cease over the holidays. In the new year the entire team will be back in all business fields starting on January 9.

The new company building of Zedler-Group takes shape: By the end of the year the structural work will be finished. In January the interior construction will start. The new building will not only provide additional space for the three main business fields, but for the first time also facilities that can be used by companies, manufacturers, associations and clubs to hold their workshops and seminars in.
Apart from a few details the construction of the new building goes according to plan: Since the groundbreaking ceremony in May 2016 all works have been finished in time. With the concreting of the roof before Christmas, the structural work will be finished.
From January on, the building will be equipped with windows, doors and building technology. With regard to the latter Zedler-Group attaches special importance to energy efficiency: This means for example that the waste heat of the compressors is stored and used for heating the entire building. With additional solar panels for electricity and warm water as well as state-of-the-art insulation, nearly the complete energy necessary for daily business will be produced directly in-house.
The new company building which is only 100 metres away from the current company address will offer three times the space of the old building. This additional space will be highly appreciated and enable the Zedler team to respond even quicker to the demands of the customers of our testing institute, the loss adjusting agency and the technical documentation. In future, this will help to avoid time-expensive modifications in the test laboratory more often, because there will be space for additional testing systems. The experts will be able to gather the information required more quickly, because all product documentations will be archived in one room.
The new building will also provide facilities for holding seminars – not only for Zedler-internal events. They can be booked by external companies, manufacturers and associations for training courses and workshops. A spacious terrace, a bright cafeteria and a bicycle collection publicly accessible for the first time with exhibits from 200 years of bicycle development will make the guests feel comfortable during the breaks.
In autumn, Dirk Zedler was asked to come on the big stage: Under the patronage and in the presence of politician Winfried Kretschmann Zedler-Institut was honoured as one of ten finalists in the competition "State Prize for Young Companies 2016" for responsible entrepreneurial skills and action.
The state prize for young companies in Baden-Wuerttemberg is awarded to companies making an exemplary contribution to a sustainable society. It is considered one of the most coveted business awards in Baden-Wuerttemberg. In 2016 the record-breaking number of 604 companies applied for the award.
Together with nine other companies Zedler-Institut made it into the final and was awarded on the occasion of an official ceremony. "With the prize winners we award the ten best young entrepreneurs 2016 and herewith honour innovation, creativity and above all their courage for entrepreneurship and self-employment. This year’s winners give us an idea of the incredible wealth of ideas in our state," stated Winfried Kretschmann, Minister President of Baden-Wuerttemberg, during his official speech.
When Zedler-Institut was solemly given their award, the company’s capability of connecting the passion for bicycles with the highly professional economic operations was pointed out in particular. As a proof, the jury of the state prize referred to the continuous growth in turnover and in the number of staff members in the past years.
Traditionally, Zedler-Group has donated money to non-profit organizations at the end of the year instead of buying customer presents. This year we strengthen our commitment with an additional amount collected by the team members in favour of a bicycle relief organization in Africa.
As in the past years we refrain from giving Christmas presents to our business partners and instead donate the respective sum to various non-profit organizations like Greenpeace, Médecins Sans Frontières and Unicef. This year World Bicycle Relief will obtain a special donation: The team members of Zedler-Group collected money for the organization that works on mobilizing the African people by providing them with strong and durable bicycles. The commitment of both, the Zedler-Group and the individual staff members, helps more people to take benefit from the advantages of a good bicycle.

At this year's Eurobike Show the German Yellow Press "Bild" presented the special-interest magazine "Bicycle", which is possibly the most outstanding evidence for the bicycle’s rosy future. If the German Axel Springer publishing group produces a special-interest magazine, you can be sure that the products featured have reached the general public. Increasing piece numbers, in particular in the case of pedelecs are promising, because more and more people use bicycles and pedelecs in their daily life.
But those who are successful in this respect with products contributing in mobility break, however, new ground. Politics, authorities and consumer protectors keep a very close eye on everything around the bicycle. This is not discretionary, but a must and stipulated for example in the product safety law identically applicable all over Europe.
At this point Australia presses ahead and intends to enact specific laws on bicycle safety. It is for example planned to limit the period of use. What is going to happen then in our beloved cycle industry may be more than exciting. We have to fear that we will have to comply with requirements that will endanger our business model.
We should therefore prevent this by doing our homework as quickly as possible. We have long been aware of it; the fundamental regulations were written into our homework book by the respective European legislation as early as in 1989. But they have not been implemented by all countries yet.
The worldwide applicable ISO standards are an important step. It is, however, not a secret that these standards will by far not ensure the production of safe bicycles. And this will not change in the near future; in this respect the necessary international harmonisation is far too slow.

Especially in the case of forks material failure can have serious consequences. As a consequence of a fatal accident, Australia’s authorities are considering stricter regulations as to the durability of bicycle parts. It is, however, not only by legislative regulations that the safety of bicycles and parts can be improved, it is also by voluntary safety measures prior to the market launch. In the end realistic load tests during development are not only less expensive for bicycle manufacturers and dealers and require less effort, they also provide more safety when cycling than strict standards with limited-use restrictions.
At the beginning of December the cycle sport portal cycling.today reported on a tragic accident in Australia: A 49-old father of a family died as a result of a serious fall. The cause of the fall was the fracture of the fork steerer tube at full speed, as a consequence of which the cyclist all of a sudden lost control of his road bike. According to the Australian coroner, the material failure originated from a hidden manufacturing defect that remained undetected until this terrible moment after several thousands of miles.
Legal experts are now requesting a time limit for bicycles and bicycle parts to be introduced, at the end of which a product should no longer be used. They refer to similar limits in the aviation industry where material and manufacturing processes are often comparable to those used in the bicycles and bicycle parts production. That’s how accidents like the one of the father of a family are intended to be prevented in the future. The fact that forks in particular bear a certain safety risk is underlined by more than 40 recall actions in the past years. Numerous manufacturers, among them big brands like Canyon, Cervélo, Felt, Giant, Reynolds or Specialized, had to replace several thousands of bicycle forks due to an increased risk of steerer breakage.
There is, however, also another way to face the problem of component failure in service. If frames and forks are tested prior to their market launch, possible defects are likely to be found during development or fabrication, i.e. before the respective product is used by a cyclist for the first time. For this it is crucial that the fatigue strength tests are not only performed in accordance with the worldwide acknowledged ISO standards. These only make for a part of the loads to which a bicycle is exposed in practical use. For forks the standards provide for example only test cycles that apply loads from the front wheel to the fork legs. All forces acting from the handlebars on the fork steerer tube (for example when riding out of the saddle), are not considered. A defect like the one that caused the fatal accident in Australia can most probably not be detected with a load tests performed in accordance with the ISO standards.
Zedler-Institut therefore developed own test procedures going beyond the requirements of the ISO standards. Our test cycles for forks include various load tests depicting the multiple loads acting on fork legs and fork steerer tubes during cycling. These tests are performed by applying the cycles of the approved Multiload handlebar test on the fork. In addition, stress conditions are tightened by using a stem with an established high potential for fork steerer tube damage during the tests.
These tests comply with the tests developed by Zedler-Institut on Advanced Plus level and can be ordered by frame and fork manufacturers optional with the basic ISO tests. The certainty that a fork type has passed these high-level load tests successfully already prior to delivery to retailers and wholesalers allows manufacturers most probably to avoid expensive recall actions. By doing so, the bicycle industry also prevents strict legal regulations from being put into practice that would limit their individual scope of action to a considerable extent. Such strict regulations, as considered by Australian authorities at present, lose their urgency if manufacturers themselves take measures in view of ensuring operational safety and fatigue strength.

The German Oskar-Patzelt-Foundation honours the work of Zedler-Institut: As one of five finalists from Baden-Wuerttemberg the Ludwigsburg company was awarded at the "Grand Prix of Small and Medium Business".
In the laudatory speech Zedler-Institut was honoured as driver of progress in the cycle industry: "Since the foundation of the company Zedler-Group has stood up for/advocated improvements in the technology, quality and safety of bicycles and pedelecs." Organisers were furthermore impressed by the company’s environmental and social commitment. As examples for this commitment they emphasized the motivational incentives for the employees to commute by bicycle or the fact that Zedler-Institut established a bicycle workshop that is open to pupils and asylum seekers for free.
Company founder Dirk Zedler is very happy that his company made it to the final of the economic competition: "The award is a great honour for us as well as a significant recognition of the bicycle. It underlines that Germany’s bicycle industry has gained in importance and does not need to fear comparison with other industrial sectors anymore."
The annual business award of the Oskar-Patzelt-Foundation is classified as one of the most coveted business awards in Germany. This year 4,796 companies were nominated for the "Grand Prix of Small and Medium Business" in Germany, 874 small and medium-sized companies that were nominated are based in Baden-Wuerttemberg.
At Zedler-Group young people have the opportunity to enter the job market and the cycle industry: In 2016 two new apprenticeship places in completely different professions were created and filled.
Two new young trainees joined the Zedler team this year in September. Jannik Würz started the training for the job as bicycle mechanic after gaining some workshop experience during his internship in the company in summer. At present, he prepares bicycles and parts for the tests in the test laboratory and returns them to the principals.
After graduation from high school Sultan Sen decided to start a training to become digital and print media manager at Zedler-Group. She supports the Technical Documentation team in the creation of operating instructions and user manuals and helps with the disposition of the "Basic", "Brand Basic" and "Individual".
Professional training has tradition at Zedler-Institut. In 2004 the first trainee to learn the job of a bicycle mechanic joined the Zedler team. Back in these days, Ingenieur- und Sachverständigenbüro für Fahrradtechnik Zedler was one of the first companies in Baden-Wuerttemberg to offer an apprenticeship for this still young profession. This pioneering role repeated when Zedler-Group created an apprenticeship for the job of two-wheeler mechatronics technician as one of the first training companies in 2014. With the newly created job in the field of digital and print media design, Zedler-Group extend their training offer to three different jobs.
Are mountain bikes to become disposables? Shall it be possible to replace pedelec parts at will? And which customer demands with regard to an electric bicycle are justified? Bicycle manufacturers and dealers are increasingly dealing with basic issues as to what expectations their products must meet. In Eurobike Show Daily magazine Dirk Zedler published three essays on this.
The past years have brought quite a flood of innovations in the field of sports bicycles and pedelecs. Regardless of the quality of these improvements, they resulted in the fact that the interests of manufacturers, retailers and users in the bicycle industry drifted apart considerably. New technologies and standards changing at a rapid pace have made the maintenance and the use of bicycles and pedelecs much more sophisticated.
The number and type of complaints that have to be clarified in court lead to the conclusion that some manufacturers don’t care a lot about the after-sales of their products. Buyers on their part have a claim that their investment pays for several years. If their pedelec loses range within a year or the suspension fork of their mountain bike can neither be repaired nor replaced after only four years, they are disappointed. The specialist retailer finds him/herself somewhere in between. They are torn between profitability pressure and the responsibility they must accept towards their customers.
Products which do not comply with the requirements of safety, reliability and a long service life are something Dirk Zedler is dealing with every day as a testing expert and publicly appointed and sworn expert. These experiences were incorporated in three specialist articles published during this year’s Eurobike Show. Replacing aluminium components after a fall?
It’s not long ago that the bicycle and pedelec models to be launched in 2017 were presented to the public at Eurobike Show. Behind the scenes, however, manufacturers are already working at full speed on developing the models of the next generation. During the development of new products often the most acute problem is a lack of time. It is therefore not unusual that reliable testing prior to series production is dropped. This can turn out to be fatal resulting in liability claims and even product recalls. This year bicycle manufacturers already had to recall more than 15 products, the number of recalls in 2015 comprised 39 products all in all.
The good news for bicycle manufacturers under time pressure: Technically state-of-the-art and therefore reliable testing does not automatically mean that you have to wait many weeks for the results. In 2016, my team succeeded, apart from a few exceptions, in mounting your test units within 48 hours at the latest on the first testing system and starting the load tests. The test results are usually delivered within five working days at the latest.
To uphold this service in 2017 as well, we have invested once again in our testing systems and the infrastructure of our laboratory.

We have extended our capacities for frames and forks once again to ensure that you obtain your test results at short term. From now on we will be able to test ten frames / framesets at the same time.
It is a fact that there is no agreement among competitors on the market on how to perform tests: It is generally agreed that alternating loads arise during riding and that forces occur in a nearly randomised manner.
There are two ways of responding to this "tohubohu": in terms of figures and with the lowest common denominator as so-called single-step tests (standards) or in terms of more complex tests, which are, however, more realistic, by time-lapse testing of the loads and forces on the testing system. This is basically more logical: the closer to real-life road or trail conditions, the better.
While changing over to the requirements of the ISO tests, we have been optimizing our subsequent Basic, Advanced and Advanced Plus requirements. Thanks to the progress in testing technology – mechanically as well as in terms of control and regulation – we are now able to test in yet more mixed sequences, that is to say more realistic to your benefit.

Test certificates issued in Asia are the basis of many releases in the cycle industry. The test protocols are, however, a two-edged sword, in particular with regard to the process relating to the conformity of pedelecs. The legislator draws a clear line with regard to the acceptance of test results. This line is the economic area of the European Union. Every person importing components from a foreign country into the EU is considered manufacturer of these products. If you as bicycle manufacturer assemble bicycles, you will additionally be considered manufacturer of individual components, if you import these components into the EU. This means, you are not only considered manufacturer of the frame, but also manufacturer of suspension forks, rear derailleurs, handlebars and so on. In strict legal terms the actual logo of the manufacturer, e.g. on a crank, is obsolete. You assume full and sole responsibility.
You do not believe this? The Higher Regional Court Oldenburg, Germany, sentenced a bicycle manufacturer due to missing tests: The manufacturer mounted defective pedals. The court reproached that the bicycle manufacturer had refrained from conducting random sample tests of the purchased products.
A similar judgement was made by the Higher Regional Court Dresden, Germany. A bicycle manufacturer had complained about defective back-pedal brakes. This bicycle manufacturer was also held against that he had not conducted random sample tests.
As a result, any attempt to prove the durability of products by means of test results issued outside Europe can be rejected easily by every court. For this reason you as manufacturer should purchase products either from importers located within the EU and with substantial test protocols. Or you have to test on your own or have the tests conducted within the EU.
Zedler-Institut reached the top 20 of companies competing for the Regional prize for young companies in 2016. The prize is awarded every second year by the state government of Baden-Wuerttemberg and L-Bank.
From the alltogether 604 applications L-Bank Stuttgart selected Zedler-Institut together with 19 other companies and invited them to make a presentation. The convincing points were our corporate concept, our social commitment and our substantial as well as economically sound management.

On November 17 and 18, 2016, Dirk Zedler will hold a lecture at the workshop "From DIN EN to DIN EN ISO 4210 / 8098 and the new DIN 79010" of the work group bicycle safety of DVM e.V. (German Association for Materials Research and Testing).
Almost exactly thirty years ago I was standing at the starting line of my third triathlon in Ettlingen near Karlsruhe – with self-built disc wheel covers. I did not win, but my entry into the world of cycling was settled. I built some more disc wheels with friends and sold them. These GFRP laminates even won a German and a European Championship. From then on I have been active in this sector.
You and your products benefit from 30 years of experience in bicycle technology as an athlete, engineer and through about ten thousand expert reports under my aegis.
After laying the tracks for the future with the new headquarters a few weeks ago, we take the next step by founding a new company – GDFS mbH.
My team of meanwhile 20 employees and I are still driven by the love of cycling, the passion for sustainable mobility and the fascination for the continuously innovative bicycle technology.

Continuous growth of all business fields with meanwhile more than 800 expert reports per year, an above-average growth of our test laboratory activities and a growing number of employees are the reasons to adjust the individual business fields to current conditions. On August 1, 2016, GDFS (Gesellschaft der Fahrrad-Sachverständigen mbH), the limited liability company of bicycle experts, therefore commenced operation.
Dirk Zedler: "Since 1993 my name has been standing for the highest competence level in expert activity in the bicycle sector. Thousands of expert reports for courts, insurance companies, legal and natural persons have contributed to profound clarification of failure cases, the settlement of liability losses, burglary damage and theft; not only in Germany, but also well beyond the borders. In addition, a broad public among consumers meanwhile benefits from our expertise that has grown over the years. To many people I am known as expert on television or as author of specialist books."
However, the only things that will change are the company’s legal form and name. The quality of our expert reports and our employees will remain the same and founder Dirk Zedler stays in the company. In his position as managing director his year-long experience will be fully at the experts’ disposal.
Owner manuals from Zedler-Institut tested by German product testers Stiftung Warentest
This year, too, Stiftung Warentest (StiWa) tested electric bicycles, including their manuals (test 07/2016). The results were again a rollercoaster of emotions for many manufacturers.
It is known that we do not fully approve of test methods and results of Stiftung Warentest. We often criticised them openly and harshly in the past. Irrespectively of this, the results of our manuals were consistently at least "good" – as they had been in the previous years, too.

The German bicycle associations VSF and ZIV updated the guidelines for the parts replacement that were drawn up together with Zedler-Institut in 2015 in order to provide bicycle retailers with some information to follow when replacing parts of e-bikes and pedelecs up to 25 km/h (15 mph). Furthermore, these guidelines have just been approved of by the umbrella organization for German industry guilds (Bundesinnungsverband für das Zweiradmechaniker-Handwerk), as well.
There have been no changes in recommendations as far as the choice of components is concerned. Explanations were added to categories and contents, however. The guidelines are now containing additional information on why the replacement of certain components is subject to certain conditions and what retailers have to take into account when replacing parts.
The luggage carrier is a very good example: It was often not clear to retailers why luggage carriers were category 2 replacement parts that must only be replaced on the vehicle manufacturer’s approval. The revised guidelines provide the information that luggage carriers directly affect the load distribution on the bicycle and therefore can have a positive as well as negative influence on the riding behaviour.
In 2016 employees of Zedler-Group took again part in the cycle tours Sachsenheimer Lichtenstern-Tour and Ludwigsburger Barock-Rundfahrt (RTF) together with business partners, families and friends of the company. Even persistent rain and temperatures just above 10 degrees Celsius could not keep participants from riding 40 to 208 kilometres. The all in all 46 participants collected 4,922 km on both Sundays and earned 30 cents per kilometre that will be donated, just like in the previous years, to World Bicycle Relief.
With this donation the project will be able to buy 11 new, solid Buffalo bicycles and a whole lot of accessories for Africa. Furthermore, the Zedler team won the cup for the largest group for the sixth time in a row at RTF in Ludwigsburg.
Managing director Dirk Zedler: "We are happy to have earned bicycles for Africa this year again that will allow more than 50 Africans to travel to work or to start a training and thereby improve their lives a little."
