The steering center is one of the most heavily stressed parts of a mountainbike. Only sufficient tests show whether or not the parts stand up to the stress caused by riding. Real life failures, we examined in my office, have always had a stout reason: A 140 kilo rider jumping down a high stair, a stem which was clamped far too tight, the brake levers being clamped asymmetrically. Therefore, it is most of the time incompatible component parts, improper mounting or too hard riding which cause the parts to break. It is important to have clear rules for mechanics and consumers: Exact information on permissible rider's weight, intended use and proper mounting.
