All about bicycles, pedelecs, technology and safety in the press

In our daily work as we deal with bicycle safety, technology and user manuals we come across lots of safety risks. The most frequent ones are published in articles of the leading German special-interest magazines TOUR – Europas Rennrad-Magazin Nr. 1, BIKE – Das Mountainbike Magazin Europas Nr. 1 and E-Bike – Das Pedelec-Magazin to make this information important for the sector accessible to a wider public.

In addition, we are regularly cited by further special-interest magazines or trade journals as well as more and more by radio and television and in their media reports, which shows us that we are completely right with our information.

New guidelines for parts replacement on e-bikes

The work group parts replacement on e-bikes and pedelecs updated both guidelines for the parts replacement on electric bicycles (25 kmh/15.5 mph and 45 kmh/28 mph).

The work group is made up of these organisations

The “Guidelines for the parts replacement of CE marked e-bikes / pedelecs up to a pedal assist of 25 km/h (15.5 mph)” was extended by another category. The new “category 5” includes in particular notes for mounting accessories. According to a statement of the work group, this had become necessary due to the frequent inquiries of specialist dealers that were unsure about retrofitting accessories. There were now no inquiries left open as to the retrofitting of accessories, such as bar ends, front baskets or child seats.

In the “Guidelines for the parts replacement of speed e-bikes / pedelecs up to a pedal assist of 45 km/h (28 mph)” the brake system was added in category 2 (components which may only be replaced upon presentation of a valid test report) and notes on front baskets, pannier bags and bar ends in category 4 (special notes for mounting accessories). The following associations and companies are involved in the work group parts replacement on e-bikes and pedelecs: The umbrella organization for German industry guilds BIV, TUEV Rhineland, Velotech.de, the German service and bicycle association VSF, Zedler-Institut as well as the German bicycle association ZIV. It was only recently that the work group had published two explanatory documents on pedelec tuning and retrofitting bicycles with electric drive.
