In our daily work as we deal with bicycle safety, technology and user manuals we come across lots of safety risks. The most frequent ones are published in articles of the leading German special-interest magazines TOUR – Europas Rennrad-Magazin Nr. 1, BIKE – Das Mountainbike Magazin Europas Nr. 1 and E-Bike – Das Pedelec-Magazin to make this information important for the sector accessible to a wider public.

This decision helps bicycle dealers and workshops a lot, as it is not clear in legal terms what they are allowed to change and at what point they have to request the approval from the vehicle manufacturers or the system providers. By means of these recommendations German bicycle dealers receive an orientation when it comes to change certain components on a pedelec up to a speed of 25 kmh.
Yet at the beginning of this year there had been controversial discussions between the interested parties, as the reporting in SAZbike shows. There were different legal interpretations in the cycle industry and the respective interested parties took up position. All participants agree, however, in the point that clarification for all partners are of major importance. With this fact in mind a table was developed which subdivides the components of a pedelec in four categories and which is intended as future guideline for those who are requested to give their approval for the replacement of components on pedelecs. This table does not only list the components, but also formulates supplementary remarks.
