Measuring, weighing, documenting
Each bicycle is measured and weighed by us, all parts are identified and documented. In the case of pedelecs we additionally record the weight distribution on front and rear wheel which gives information on the riding behaviour of the bicycle. Subsequently, the bicycles are partly dismounted and prepared for the tests on the test stands. The laboratory values are determined on measuring and testing systems of Zedler-Institut für Fahrradtechnik und -Sicherheit.
On the test run
Subsequently, all bicycles are ridden on a test round matching the intended use of the bicycle type to test the drive, the comfort and the riding behaviour. There is a specific rating catalogue for each bicycle type. The results from the laboratory and the riding tests are noted down in a protocol which results in the individual score for the categories mentioned below as well as in the overall rating.
Categories and individual scores
COMFORT Decisive for the riding comfort are handlebars, fittings, suspension elements, tyres and saddle. We judge the quality of the components and the subjective riding impression.
SAFETY The question whether the riding behaviour of the test candidates is safe and troublefree, must be answered by them in intensive riding tests. The stability of bicycles designed to transport luggage is tested by us with and without defined test load on the luggage carrier. The frames and forks of e-bikes are mounted to a specific testing system developed by Zedler-Institut for Fahrradtechnik und -Sicherheit. In the case of bicycles without e-drive we use the test on the test stand for random tests, if bicycles have a particular behaviour during the test run. In addition, we test and rate the quality of the brake systems and lighting systems.
