Number 5 brought to life

By putting number 5 into operation, we are able to test eight wheels simultaneously for stiffness and static strength, fatigue strength of the brake disc mount, the hubs, especially their flanges, the spokes and the rims. For the other normative tests, such as burst pressure, true running, etc., we have of course additional test equipment.

The background to the growing need to test both the front and the rear wheel are

the constant changes in operation due to the ‘E’ in all bicycle categories.

High-torque motors with more traction on the chain, higher brake forces due to disc brakes in combination with trailers or cargo bikes, not to mention when combined with an anti-lock feature, heavy e-bike types and new, often neither lightweight nor sporty user groups, put far more load on the wheels than before.

In the experts reports department we learned that hub flanges can shear off; in a dealer forum where we are members we followed reports about broken spokes and cracks in the rims intensively, and recently we all learned from the press that in some hubs even the brake disc mount can shear off abruptly.

All these real cases of failure, some with unforeseeable consequences for life and limb, are our incentive to develop the tests and the testing systems in such a way that this can no longer happen to wheels in future. Countless wheels, some known to be weak, some known to be very proven, were destroyed by us in order to verify the test criteria.

It goes without saying that we are again performing the tests according to the bike categories, from gravel via the classic e-bike to the transportation bike, in combination with the well-known Advanced, Advanced Plus and Advanced Plus XXL weight classes introduced by us.

However, what we still don't do, is putting fully-assembled bikes or transportation bikes on the roller. There is still no indication that structural defects cannot be detected during component or, rather, cleanly structured component assembly tests in the bicycle, e-bike and transportation bike categories that we work on, if the work is properly regulated.

Clearly rattling cables or their grinding marks, loose bolted connections of mudguards etc. are however not tested when, for example, a fork undergoes a pneumatic or hydraulic fatigue test, with overload and impact testing for fatigue strength. Experience has shown that it is easier to evaluate these functional tests, that can only partially be reproduced by a roller, during test rides. We recommend test rides for many reasons. The important thing is to always activate GPS and use a log book.
Apart from that, documented test rides have always been a good argument in our practice in court and in countless accompanied market surveillance proceedings

Product safety training and CE workshop – review and new dates online

The “Product safety and liability, CE marking” workshops by Zedler-Institut are now established events in the cycle industry. “It’s obvious that Mr Zedler has an extremely high level of expertise in this subject area. The workshop was very rich in information and specific issues were dealt with. A perfectly organised and, above all, informative seminar with content easily to implement in daily use.” That was the conclusion of Michael Lappe of Fahrrad-Lappe, Muenster.

And Tony Martin of

kids bike revolution GmbH also showed himself satisfied in his feedback: “Very good and interesting workshop.”

Two opinions, 14 participants, mostly members of the German industry association Zukunft Fahrrad e.V. They had recommended the workshop in the run-up to their Spring Reception. With average marks of 1.28 for the performance and 1.23 for the presentation, the speaker and his team were recognised for the company group's commitment to training and further education.

Amidst historical bicycles the following issues are handled:

  • Which directives, laws and standards are relevant for placing bicycles, e-bikes and cargo bikes on the market?
  • How to be on the safe side with CE marking?
  • How do I avoid market surveillance authorities stopping the sale of EPACs, e-MTBs and e-cargo bikes?
  • At what point do I have to recall?
More details on the product safety and CE workshops in our portfolio.

Bicycle expert training – New dates online

Theory in the seminar area / © Zedler-Group
According to statista.de, the number of bicycle accidents resulting in personal injury has fortunately not risen significantly over the past 10 years. Actually rising sharply, however, are the settlement costs for the repair or the replacement of bicycles, e-bikes and transportation bikes that have been involved in accidents due to the increasing value of the bikes.

Many cost estimates from bicycle dealers are inadequate, as a consequence of which insurers set in motion a process that often runs for months.

Still in short supply are

experts who are able to draw up appropriate and professional experts reports for insurers and courts across the country. Non-specialist experts often poach with superficial knowledge, and then things can escalate.

The experts share these insights as well as their wealth of experience and knowledge from more than 30 years of experts practice in two-day training courses, where they provide participants from the cycle industry, motor vehicle experts or field loss adjusters from insurers with the necessary tools for assessing the loss on bicycles and e-bikes.

The training courses differ in terms of content / focus and time spent on theory and practice according to the respective target group.

The new dates for the “Basic” training and the “Advanced” training are now online on our website.
